Find your style

What is a style? There are many styles out there, what makes your style? How do you find your style? What’s your definition of style. Photography can be broken up into three types.  These are the: scenery, travel and documentary photography. Each has its own form of photography style. An example of scenery photography is when you have a great photo showing scenic views. Travel photography is what you take while on vacation to accomplish a theme that is set before you go to the place. In documentary photography, it would be taking photos of whatever everyday life is around but not in a statement way of trying to make some type of statement or “show”. The major types of cameras that people use for capturing their art would be the DSLR, mirrorless and the point and shoot camera. The type of camera you choose does matter because there are differences between them all but most importantly is how to use it in capturing your art (how you see it) I will leave that up to you.

Finding your style can be tricky, but hopefully, this guide will help you understand what it is, and how you can better find your own. Although for photographers, “style” seems to be a pretty ingrained element within their psyche. Have you ever wondered how photographers find their style? Good question. A photographer’s style is a unique characteristic that he/she consistently uses in their work; it’s what makes their photos recognizable among other photographers. Finding your style may not be easy, but once you do, it will help you build a portfolio of photos you can share with others and even use to grow as an artist.

One of the biggest challenges new photographers face is finding their style. It can be extremely difficult to stay inspired and work consistently if your photos are in limbo between two or more genres. The good news is, that there is no specific “style” that you need to shoot, but rather a subject matter or approach to shooting. You have your own style the moment you let go of the fear of learning something new and trying something different than what you’re used to doing. Finding a style is about honing in on what makes your photography unique. It’s about finding the images which you feel truly embody you and your own subjectivity to the world. It’s about recognizing the types of photographs that you enjoy taking, and developing this identity. This can take some time, but it’s one of the most important parts of knowing yourself as a photographer. Whether it’s romantic or modern, soft or hard, colourful or black and white, you’ll have to figure out what kind of images resonate with you, and why.
